2021 a new start for Classic Moped Spares

What does 2021 mean for Classic Mopeds in the UK?

Will Moped Prices continue to rise?

With lock down, demand for restoration projects has grown. Prices seemed to soar through 2020. Some restoration projects that were £250 in 2019, are now being advertised for £900-£1200! I do not know if these prices are being achieved or whether people are asking because they do not want to sell?

I have noticed a trend for people to now be looking on Facebook Market Place or Gumtree rather than the traditional market places.  Auction sites no longer seem to have the trust that they used to,  and I understand Gumtree has been bought by one!

You can now only buy our parts direct from www.classicmopedspares.com.

Classic Moped Spares more parts, more choice!

2020 was a bit of disaster, trying to juggle additional personal commitments due to lock down and Brexit looming at the end of the year. Fortunately Classic Moped Spares invested heavily in stock towards the end of 2020 to ensure that we were able to continue supplying customers in the Uk throughout 2021. Classic Moped Spares is increasing its range of products and we expect this to continue throughout 2021.

Exporting

In January 2021 due to the lack of guidance and general confusion over exporting, Classic Moped Spares chose not to export any goods worldwide. This was not something we wished to do, but when major companies also chose not to because of confusion surrounding the rules, we felt that we also had no choice.

We have started exporting again in February 2021 and hopefully this will be able to continue going forward. Export prices have risen due to a combination of covid, less air travel, additional paperwork and regulations.

Some customers have reported that they are unable to buy goods from other countries and they are being also hit for taxes they were not aware of. If you buy from us within the Uk, our vat is included within the price and there are no hidden fees. From outside the Uk, please check if you have to pay tax on buying goods from the Uk. There are so many countries in the World we cannot advise on this.

Our aim is to try to get along with everyone!

Challenges

2021 is going to continue to be challenging for us. Currently we have less time due to restrictions, but still want to help. The best way to get in contact is through the Classic Moped Spares website contact us page, and I will try to help when I can.

Classic Moped Spares is hoping later in the year as things go back to some kind of normal, to be able to advertise more new old stock and mopeds that have been bought over the years that we have not had time to look at.

Thank you for supporting us

Please do continue to share your good experiences of buying parts from Classic Moped Spares with your friends, over the phone, in clubs, forums, facebook or where-ever convenient. Without your support the Uk would not have moped parts suppliers such as us and that would be such a shame as we have helped so many people over the years restore their mopeds.

To quote the famous words of Sir Captain Tom, "Tomorrow will be a better day!"

Classic Moped Spares Open Online Worldwide Parts

Classic Moped Spares is Open Worldwide

In 2020 the World has changed. There has never been more of a need to keep positive:-

Classic Moped Spares is Open For Parts to Help you with your Restoration

I have decided to stay open to supply what I can, when I can, to help everyone staying at home. Juggling lock down family life does make matters a bit more complicated, however most parts I have managed to continue to supply at great prices to you.

2020 should be an era for Vision not Darkness

Restoration Steps

So now you have dug the old girl out the shed and want some help
  1. Firstly you need to identify what you have. This can be done by searching images on google or you can also look at the front covers of manuals we have available at www.motorbikemanual.com
  2. Next check the parts you need from your manual and bike and pop across to Classic Moped Spares. I cannot promise we will have everything, but it is a good place to start.
  3. If you need further help there are plenty of online clubs, forums and you tube videos. The videos are probably the best place for impartial advice. If you want to help Classic Moped Spares then do mention us to as many people and in as many of these places as possible.
Parts Tips

  1. If you buy direct from Classic Moped Spares www.classicmopedspares.com then you will be supporting a small business who has been trying to help many people for many years.
  2. Do not assume that similar parts fit every machine. I have carefully over many years and much research checked what we advertise as suitable so please read the descriptions
  3. You can search our website a number of ways and sometimes more is less. Just type in one keyword first such as switch, then add other words if too many switches come up, and try different spacing and words.
  4. You will find many suppliers now available, and some of the larger market places have grown so much it is impossible to find what you want. You may end up spending huge amounts of money on hidden fees and postage from different companies and individuals.
    1. At Classic Moped Spares what you add to your cart will combine for very reasonable tracked shipping rates to give you confidence that you will receive your goods
    2. At Classic Moped Spares you are going to one shop, a proper business
Communication and Delivery
  1. During the Coronavirus, I have had to juggle time working with family commitments so it is more difficult to take phone calls so please only try if absolutely necessary or listen to my latest answer message instructions. If you use the contact page on the website, then usually within a week I can respond
  2. Sending all our goods tracked will give you peace of mind on you delivery progress. Please put an email and mobile number if possible so the Courier can send you updates direct to you.
  3. You can keep up to date with the latest news from us at our facebook page. Please like and share, and also send links to our products to your friends.
Parts Availability

  1. We may ration the amount of items we give to any one person. It would not be fair for someone to buy up a lot of our rare parts and then sell them elsewhere at inflated prices.
  2. Over the past 3 years we have improved our systems so that stock is more accurate, and so far during the Coronovirus pandemic we have fulfilled over 99.7% of orders.
  3. We are not perfect and mistakes can happen, but I will try my best to resolve any stock issues.
Quality
  1. Our spares are sourced from reputable manufacturers and we also do a lot of additional checks. You may find similar looking products of lower quality elsewhere. We will not accept any of these parts sent back to us!
Prices

  1. We continue to be among the lowest prices for many products. We know how convenient it is to buy from larger market places, where convenience may cost you a lot more money for poorer quality and service. For example one of our fuel taps at £3.99 is available on these convenient market places elsewhere for £19.99!
  2. I will continue to strive to keep our prices as reasonable as possible.
  3. Combining your items in the cart will also save you shipping costs.

Coronovirus

  1. I work in an isolated environment and we are fortunate to be in an area which has had a very low record of cases. I am still maintaining Social distancing and follow the additional hygiene rules in place regarding everything going in and out. Please follow the latest advice from the Government to keep yourself Safe especially when receiving packages from Couriers.
  2. I have been named as a Key Worker supplying parts to help many people stay at home fix their projects. 99% of people have been fantastically positive towards what I am doing.

The Future

  1. I will do my best to try to continue to supply parts to help out you my customers at home restoring or maintaining your Mopeds.
  2. Classic Moped Spares future is in your hands so please continue to share information about our products where you can on Facebook, Twitter to your clubs or friends.
Thank you once again to everyone who has supported Classic Moped Spares at this difficult time

Classic Moped Spares to Reopen

Classic Moped Spares to Open 8th March 2019

What happened to Classic Moped Spares?

Unfortunately Classic Moped Spares had to close towards the end of 2018, due to ill health. Owner Moped Malc was taken into Intensive Care and admitted to a High Dependency Ward at the local Hospital. Fortunately he was saved by Doctors and Nurses, and has since been recovering.

In the news last year there was lots of talk of don't take antibiotics. Like an idiot Moped Malc believed this and possibly after not going to the Doctors early enough ended up with a combination of Whooping Cough, Influenza, Pneumonia and Sepsis. Due to originally being extremely fit he survived, yet months later is still recovering! It would not be an understatement to say he nearly died!

The Good News is :-

  • Classic Moped Spares Website www.classicmopedspares.com will reopen from the 8th March 2019. You will be able to buy direct from the website.
  • Please contact us through the website or email classicmopedspares@hotmail.co.uk and not through the mobile phone number.

And

  • We are planning a stock take for two weeks in mid April so will shut down at this time.
  • Our Ebay store will stay closed for the moment.

Near Miss

Unlike Mopeds we can't all have a new engine so look after the one you have!

Are Motorbikes and Mopeds better than Gold as an investment?

Are Mopeds Worth Investing in?

Don't Laugh, can a Moped out perform a Goldstar Motorcycle?

Mopeds were often seen as a means of cheap transport, just to get you from A-B. Many were left in the side of hedges or scrapped when they stopped working , Often frowned upon by bigger bike riders, some opinions appear to be changing.

Humble mopeds from the sixties and seventies are now commanding big prices as fashion icons. Companies are even making new bikes that look like old ones. Not all these revivals have been successful as modern emissions and tougher cost competition have affected sales.

Good examples of bikes from the sixties and seventies in the Uk you could typically pay in 2018 compared to 5 years ago:-

Item Model 2013 2018
Solid Gold  Solid Gold Bar £275 £312
Moped
Honda C90
£875 £1500
Moped
Honda Camino
£180 £800
Moped
Mobylette 50V
£250 £750
Moped
Puch Maxi
£180 £600
Moped
Raleigh Runabout
£250 £750
Moped
Velo Solex
£120 £600
Moped
Yamaha FS1E
£2500 £5000
Motorbike BSA Gold Star £13750 £20,000

Prices fluctuate depending on manufacturer, model and specification, and country, and at auctions! For example some bikes in more affluent countries where there is a stronger moped scene such as the USA also command higher prices.

The Graph below shows the increase per £1 spent:-

Who performed the best

Solid Gold Bars went up and down over the past five years, which is where many Financial Institutions would recommend a safe place to invest during hard times.

The BSA Gold Star Motorcycle today values in 2018 appear to be around £20K compared to a models in Classic Motorcycle magazines in 2013 at around £13,750.

Mad as it may seem if you bought 100 x Velo Solex mopeds at total of £12,000 they could now be possibly worth somewhere between £25,000 and £60,000. Selling them all in one go may be a little bit more difficult though!

The Future

The future is uncertain, however I like to hope that prices may still rise as interest grows. Who knows?

It would be a shame if someone bought 100 mopeds just to store for investment. Much better to restore them and keep them going on the road so people can see them! If they also go up in value then just look at that as a bonus for the grandchildren!

If you would rather be a mover than a hoarder then moped parts can be found at www.classicmopedspares.com

Classic Moped Spares testing new Raleigh / Mobylette Moped Engines!

New straight out of the box:-

Fitting:

  • The engine was fitted to a 1970 Raleigh Runabout Moped. This is the first time in 50 years since the Raleigh Runabout was introduced that a new replacement engine has been succesfully fitted and tested making it an extremely proud moment for myself Moped Malc at Classic Moped Spares.
  • We have been supplying moped parts to keep older engines running for many years, but sometimes it may not be possible to salvage an engine that has been outside in poor conditions.
  • These new engine also should offer more power and easier starting and smoother electronic ignition performance.
  • Fitting will require some slight modifications and specialist jobs like this should be left to an experienced mechanic. We are currently trying to compile a quick guide to make this process easy for you. As always we are trying our best to find out all the information for you by testing a running bike ourselves.
  • The engine has electronic ignition and first impressions are that it was much more powerful that the original. It ran very smoothly.

Testing:

  • We are currently looking for a suitable location in Somerset to test ride the bike
  • The engine has been fitted and the bike being prepared for the test.
    • A new carburettor was fitted with the engine and a clean fuel supply ensured
    • The electronics were wired up
    • New cables to stop the bike were fitted and to ensure smooth control operation
    • The light was failing, but here is the bike near ready to go https://youtu.be/qB2hq_NdNz0
  • More details coming soon as we are trying to find a suitable test location before the end of 2017

Moped Malc from Classic Moped Spares was on Television!

Moped Malc was on the Black Box Television thingy in colour!

The Show!

Series 2 Episode 1 in September 2017 "Find It Fix It Flog It" on Channel 4 Television had myself Moped Malc helping with items for the show

Many of you hopefully will have watched it. I am sure that it may be repeated in future if you missed it!

Renowned enthusiast Henry Cole and Antiquity lover Simon O'Brien made a visit to see me Moped Malc and took away a Velo Solex for restoration. I hope the show sparks some more interest in the smaller machines and helps get a few more restored/saved.

Many of you may know that I have been trying hard over the past number of years to supply parts for mopeds mainly from the sixties, seventies and eighties. Hopefully the show will have revived a bit of interest in the Moped scene.

The Bikes!

There were many early bikes briefly shown such as the Mobylette, Motobecane, Peugeot, Raleigh, Velos Solex and Honda mopeds.

Its is amazing to think how popular some of the mopeds were:-

Velo Solex for example now have links to being pictured with Bridget Bardot, Steve McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Shed and Buried, Find It Fix it Flog It, and of course not to mention even Mr Bean!

For Parts/Bikes!
