Classic Mopeds, Motorcycles and Scooters Free Advertising continues! Sell my bike!

Free Advertising of Classic Bikes Continues!

Don't worry if you did not manage to advertise your moped or motorbike at classic moped spares in October as the offer is now being extended until further notice due to popular demand to help.

Currently customers (worldwide) tell me they are looking for , Honda C90's, Lambretta, Mobylettes, Raleigh mopeds and bigger bikes such as BSA Bantams, A10's, Nortons and more, I was also given the opportunity to purchase a Brough Superior for £120k, but this would probably suit a specialist auction and a larger piggy bank!

To advertise just go to www.classicmopedspares.com for details or email classicmopedspares@hotmail.co.uk

Recently I was given opportunity to acquire a Kerry Capitano Moped Truck. This has been in the same ownership for 30 years. I am awaiting some more information on this rare machine. If you know more about the model please do get in contact as more help the merrier!

The classic vintage saddle bag problem has now been solved

Classic Vintage Saddle Style Tool Bags at affordable prices

Classic Autocycle, Bicycle and Moped saddle bags have always been a luxury item until now. Many of the bikes when new did not cost much money and even today are worth relatively low values. This means that took bags or saddle bags as they were also called were relatively expensive compared to the bike. Many leather saddle bags are available however I have struggled to find anything for some time which looks in keeping and is at a reasonable price.

I am pleased to write that I have now found these new saddle bags which are available at very reasonable prices. For full details please click here

The bags are only currently available in brown, however black and white may become available at sometime. The brown bag compliments most leather saddles be they brown white or black.

The tool bag not only is water resistant, but is very well stitched and has a lining inside for additional protection.

These tool bags are ideal for keeping puncture repair kits, spark plugs, and cycle/moped maintenance tools. However not quite big enough for your lunch for those long autocycle runs!!

An example of how this fits on a bike saddle is below:-

Classic Moped and Motorcycle Restoration Price Guide

To restore or not to restore that is the question!

I often get asked the prices of classic mopeds and motorcycles when someone has just bought one. The difficulty is how do you value something 50-60 years old when a lot of it depends on someone falling in love with the vehicle in question.

You only have to watch Television programs such as 'Bargain Hunt' or 'Flog it' to realise the variations in prices made at auctions compared to dealers estimates. There are many specialist auction houses which specialise in Classic Motorcycles and the prices can vary differently from one sale to another. It really does depend on who is there on the day. I saw a Raleigh RM1 with no documents which was a real basket case make £750 at an auction in 2012, I assume just because it looked old and the bidders got slightly carried away. Similar ones I have seen advertised for more sensible prices of around £200. However prices are creeping up even of the smaller bikes so the RM1 will probably eventually be worth more.

Condition is also an important factor when trying to work out a value. I have seen some awful restoration jobs, which up close can be very disappointing however in a picture can look fantastic. In order of value I would prioritise:-
1. Original Patina to concourse standard - this is the ultimate worth paying a bit more for
2. Restored, but using original paint and parts to a very high standard
3. Original Patina reasonable standard
3. Basket Case in need of a lot of work
4. Poor Restoration, needs to be done again and very unlikely to ever reach number 2.

This is only my opinion as at September 2014 but if we put some estimated prices to an item say a 1980's  Honda C90 then:-
1. Original low mileage bike with all paperwork £1200-£1500. Dealer Prices
2. Restored £700-£900. Dealer Prices
3. Original, with V5 and running. £250-£500
4. Basket Case in need of a lot of work. £50-£250
5. Poor Restoration £50-£250

So good luck if you are looking to buy a Classic Moped and please be sensible and you will get what you want. I sell bikes on www.classicmopedspares.com some are my own and some are on behalf of customers. Please read the advert carefully and get in contact with the seller. If you want to buy or sell a bike you can email me on classicmopedspares@hotmail.co.uk

Another Busy Week for Classic Moped Spares

Sun is out! What a  busy week for Classic Moped Spares!

Finally Friday is here what a busy week the start of July 2014 has been. As previously mentioned more products have been arriving, and I also have had approaches from a number of companies interested in large long term business.

Bike sales has been doing well and some are being sold on ebay under my ebay store moped spares. This is to make room for more bikes. Wednesday was a busy day for deliveries with over 550 miles done in one day! Delivering to any part of the Uk is not a problem. I left a Puch Alpine 150 with one very satisfied customer whom is looking forward to doing a full restoration on it. Cant wait to see the finished pictures.

I looked at buying a Raleigh Roma Scooter in the week, but unfortunately it wasn't for me. If you know of a good one for sale then please get in contact. The Raleigh Roma was also known as the Orsetto in Italy. Parts are very difficult to obtain meaning that restoration projects can be a bit of headache.

Unfortunately my 1975 Puch MV50 did not sell because it had been stood for so long the clutch wasn't engaging. This issue appears to have been solved as the plates had just stuck together from no use for the past 38 years. I guess it happens to us all. On a positive note I have also found out that the bike is a Sport 2/3 Model which means it could be rarer than I first believed. The service warranty booklet is unstamped and in mint condition.
Puch MV50 Sport 2/3
Close up it looks good also
The bike is still for sale by clicking here though I must admit I am beginning to get quite fond of it and may even put an MOT on it and run it on the road!

It looks like things are going to get even busier so if you know of anyone local to Taunton looking for some part time work who likes old mopeds and motorbikes then please let me know. The role would involve picking orders, maybe even rebuilding the odd bike and possibly some computer work. I am quite open to suggestions as all areas need improvement in terms of operations and systems, so if you are good at any of these things it doesn't need to be all of them then please get in contact
Email: classicmopedspares@hotmail.co.uk

Next week looks like it is going to be even busier, I possibly have another Retro Honda C90 coming into stock and maybe even a Matchless G12 Motorcycle!

Classic Moped Restoration

The Joy of Classic Moped Spares Restorations

Classic Moped Saddles

At Classic Moped Spares I don't just sell parts I really do care about restoring mopeds and enjoy hearing from customers who have brought their machines back to life. Really wish I had more time to do restoration projects as it is so rewarding getting the machines finished.

Here are some pictures of a saddle that has just been restored for a customer:-

What a great addition this will make to a Raleigh RM6 Runabout Moped. The saddle frame has been treated then coated in rust proof paint using an electrostatic process in an attractive green colour. The stitched cover has then been added to give an amazing finished product. Once fitted to a Moped this will really add a great finishing touch.

For more information just visit the website by clicking here or visit classicmopedspares.com and type saddle in the search box

What's the point of Mobylette Woodruff Keys?

Replacement Mobylette Woodruff Keys?

Mobylette in later models stopped fitting woodruff keys or (French referred to as 'Clavette disque tambour embrayage').

Mobylette/Motobecane also stopped supplying and replacing woodruff keys. I understand that keys were not replaced, because the potential damage that they could cause to an engine if they were to break was quite severe. The nature of the key was that it was also quite likely that they would snap/break

Classic Moped Spares do not and have not sold woodruff keys for Mobylette Mopeds. (click here not to buy)

An example of an early model with woodruff key (part 224):-

An example of later models with no woodruff key:-

Restoration Labels, Transfers or Stickers for Classic Mopeds

Labels, transfers or stickers? What's the harm?

When restoring mopeds I always have opted for good quality reproduction transfers. These transfers are UK manufactured using traditional techniques and when applied correctly will provide the best possible finishing touch to any restoration.

Transfers also give the option to position the image on the bike in the exact position required compared to stickers.

Regrettably I have had complaints from customers whom have bought sheets of sticky labels thinking they are getting a bargain. What they have received are home made copies on standard label paper printed from poor quality standard colour printers. The cost of a sheet of label paper is currently pennies, the cost of ruining a restoration?

To restore a bike I know how many hours it takes to strip and clean up and then repaint. The paint needs to be a good match and time taken to apply correctly. Paint is available by clicking here.

High Quality Moped Transfers are also available for sale from Classic Moped Spares by clicking here

You do not need to buy from Classic Moped Spares, please please please be aware of what you are purchasing.

An example of how easy it is to use an image for a sticker is:-

Haynes Mobylette Manual Engine, Clutch Relay and Gearbox Chapter 1

The Haynes Mobylette Owners Workshop Manual covers the Engine, Clutch Relay and Gearbox in Chapter 1

Haynes Mobylette Manual Full of Mistakes? The truth!

Before I cover this section I have to say what a shame it was for me to hear about someone spreading rumors on the internet the Haynes Mobylette manual were full of faults. Appears to be a couple of individuals hiding their identities without any clear factual evidence.

As yet there has been no reports to me of actual mistakes since the manuals were reproduced two years ago. I can only assume that sad as it is those spreading rumors may have ulterior motives, perhaps they don't want Mobylettes restored to increase the values of theirs who knows and I guess who cares? Just make your own mind up!

If you have ever used the manual then you will be aware of the benefits. No publication can be perfect so if you do know of any major mistakes in the manual please let me know. I can then help anyone who purchases a copy as the publication was fully intended to help Mobylette Enthusiasts with their machines. I also supply spare parts and other manuals which when used together with the Mobylette Manual are extremely informative.

If you would like to support publishers and sellers such as myself, please do not support those spreading rumors. I am not interested in being contacted about rumors I have already wasted 3 sentences on it however if you do genuinely find faults in the manual then let me know so I can help others. There is not a publisher in the world who at some time has not made a mistake or made update copies.

There is a limited number of copies of these manuals so please make your own mind up and don't lose the opportunity to buy a copy before I sell out!!!

Back to the Real World:-

Chapter 1 Engine, clutch and relay gearbox

This section is from page 12 to 50, all on large A4 size pages with clear diagrams. There are large 134 photographs in this section!! I cannot really give this section justice as it really is quite large!!

Some of the diagrams are new schematics of the engine breakdown

Other diagrams include 134 detailed photographs of a moped which has been stripped down. By using a real moped which has real signs of wear Haynes goes through the process thoroughly.

This section is so large even writing down the contents would take some time as there are no less than 39 subsections!

Specifications - this is very useful information on the Commuter, Cady, Majorette, Majormatic, Minor Major, Mon 50, Duomatic.

General Description - If you want to know more about the history of the Mobylette range of engines there is a nice little summary here ranging from 1965 and discussing the three major types of engine. Useful if you wish to know why some Mobylette Mopeds go faster than others.

Operations requiring engine to be kept in or removed from the frame

Removing the engine unit from the frame - No less than 19 pictures are included here with the advice on how to take the engine out safely from the frame.

Removing the relay box from the frame - This is for those special models!

Dismantling the Engine Unit - There are then sections covering
  • removal of the exhaust, carburettor, cylinder head, barrel and piston. removing the dimoby clutch, variator and flywheel magneto.
  • seperating the crankcases
  • removing small, main bearings and oil seals
  • dismantling the relay box
Examination of Parts - Easy to take things apart, but the good thing with the Manual is it then informs you about examining the parts and how to replace or renovate.
Decarbonising Engine - Information on how to decarbonise the cylinder head
Reassembly of Engine - Again easy to take apart, extremely useful information on how to put back together
Further areas cover:-
  • Magneto
  • Piston and Cylinder Barrel replacement
  • Magneto Timing
  • Clutch
  • Cylinder Head
  • Relay Box
And of course what to do when you wish to start and run the rebuilt engine

Finally there is a Fault Diagnosis table which is extremely useful with symptons, causes and remedies.

Thank you for reading

Thanks again for reading my blog, if you can buy mobylette manuals, workshop tools, serviceable parts from my website:-

1953 Bicycle gets Parking Ticket!

Bicycle fined £60 for being parked in wrong bay

Imagine my surprise when I went to sell this bike only to find in among the paperwork a fine for £60 by the council for the bike being parked in the wrong bay. The machine is a 1953 raleigh bicycle fitted with a powerpak engine so I guess is technically a motorised vehicle

The penalty notice was issued in 2008 and not paid. I have now also found a further letter from the Council that no payment is due and that the case is closed as they accepted the owners explanation. I would have really liked to have seen the letter the owner at the time wrote to the council.

Who knows maybe the Traffic Warden was either exceptionally vigilant, just having a bad day, or issued the ticket as a prank?

If you like this story pass it on so others can be careful where you park your bicycle, auto cycle, or moped!

This bike is now for sale. Please click here to follow the link

Mobylette Moped Model Identification using the Haynes Manual

How to Identify the Mobylette Moped Models

The Mobylette Haynes Manual 'for years 1965 on' in the Introduction has a section with pictures and a list of Mobylette models supplied to the UK. In this section the following models are named:-
  • Commuter
  • Commuter de luxe
  • Cady
  • Majorette
  • Majormatic
  • Major Minor
  • Mono 50
  • Duamatic
  • Duamatic de luxe
  • Luxamatic
  • Mastermatic
  • Sports 50 MKII
  • Sports Speciale
  • Moby X
The list also includes models and engine types. This is not extensive as the book covers more models and is particularly useful for working on engines on the Raleigh Mopeds such as the RM5 Supermatic, RM6 Runabout, RM7 Wisp, RM8 Automatic, RM9 Ultramatic, RM11 Tourist and RM12 Super 50.

There is a small section on ordering spares many of which you can still get today from www.classicmopedspares.com You can also download spare parts manuals which will also help in identifying your model of mobylette and what you need before submitting a request through part hunter should the item not be listed on the website http://www.classicmopedspares.com/index.php?route=information/contact

Following this is as section with some images and advice on where to locate the Frame and Engine Numbers on your Mobylette Manual.

Next information to follow is Routine Maintenance!

Mobylette Moped Manual by Haynes is it any good?

Mobylette Haynes Manual is it any good?

Old or New the Mobylette Haynes Workshop Manuals are packed full of information:-

The Haynes Mobylette Manual is a very good source of information. Haynes have been making manuals for years and have a good reputation and this Mobylette Manual is no exception of what to expect when you need a guide to help work on your Mobylette, Motobecane or Raleigh Moped.

I cannot for obvious reasons copy parts of the manual, but I will try to explain some of the sections in my blog over the next few days, weeks perhaps even years!

The Manuals starts with a very comprehensive page 'About this manual', Acknowledgements, and an 'Introduction':-

About this Manual
The manual explains that unless mentioned and therefore considered essential special service tools have not been used. The six chapters are divided into sections. The manual is laid out in a logical sequence with easy cross reference and pictures include captions making it easy to identify.

Acknowledgements
This is where the manuals really proves its worth in the amount of research that went into originally producing it. Thanks go to Motobecane S.A for permission to reproduce many of the illustrations and for technical information. Today this information would be completely lost if it wasn't for Haynes.
Thanks also went to Motor Imports Co Ltd in Croydon who at the time supplied machines featured in the manual and to the Service Manager who provided much valuable advice and technical assistance
Further acknowledgements got to Brian Horsfall who gave considerable assistance with the dismantling and assembly of machines and devised the ingenious methods of overcoming the lack of service tools. Today many service tools are unavailable so this information is invaluable.
The photography and text were professionally edited and the Avon rubber company supplied technical details on Tyre Fitting

Introduction
There is a detailed introduction about the origins of the moped after the pre-war era with facts about how the Mobylette Mopeds were available from the 1950's and Motobecane exported 14 different models to the UK.

So is it any good? YES not half!
The small amount of detail on the front page should hopefully let you know how good this book really is. Mobylette Spare Parts Lists are very useful for identifying the parts the Mobylette Haynes Workshop Manual is a good guide for how to work on them.
The starting page about the manual and acknowledgements show how much research has gone into producing the manual and what to expect. It is packed full of information and if you are working on a Mobylette a very handy book.

The Haynes Mobylette Manual is like going back to the factory and the service dealerships and picking their brains and taking the best bits to work on the bikes. It just makes working on a Mobylette so much easier. I personally am all for an easy life!

Classic Moped Spares is Open after flooding

Open after Flooding in the area

The website www.classicmopedspares.com and ebay store classic-moped-spares are back running and orders are going out. The flooding in Somerset caused some temporary problems with the road networks (affecting deliveries) which hopefully has now been resolved.

The recent flooding has caused chaos throughout the UK and there may still be some delays with delivering orders due to the challenges faced by the road and rail networks. The Royal Mail Postal service and couriers such as Hermes out there are doing a wonderful job considering the challenges they are facing.

More high winds and bad weather is predicted with a months worth of rain expected to fall in the next few days according to the BBC. Please do keep safe

Flooding causing temporary closure at Classic Moped Spares

Flooding in Somerset is causing temporary closure

Apologies to everyone at the moment friends, customers and suppliers alike. The flooding in Somerset has caused many delays to many businesses and we have been relatively unaffected until now. Due to the recent extreme conditions a number of trees have fallen in the area and the flood water has been impassable from different directions. This has meant delays in getting orders out and responding to inquires.

There was also an accident causing gridlock around the Somerset M5 Motorway Taunton junction earlier today just to add to the flooding problems.

More information about the flooding can be obtained by clicking the BBC website

I am sure many businesses in Somerset and the UK are affected by these extreme conditions and hopefully things will improve so that normal service will resume shortly. I hope you will all keep safe and your spirits up during this time!

White Wall Tyres Back In Stock

White Wall Tyres now Back In Stock

Many moped tire sizes are now back in stock including the 2-19 Whitewall tyres. This tyre size was not available in whitewall originally, but after requesting Continental supply them to Classic Moped Spares in 2012 this size and many more were introduced into the UK and Worldwide.

These whitewall moped tyres add a superb finishing touch to any classic moped restoration.

When you compare the cost of black wall moped or bicycle tyres to the price of these fully speed rated Whitewall tyres manufactured by Continental these offer exceptional value for such a high quality and eye catching product.

Supplies as always are limited due to the small number of sales of these tyres.

Go on treat your moped today whilst stocks last, by ordering from  my ebay store classic-moped-spares or direct through the website www.classicmopedspares.com

Hopefully the weather will improve

In 2014 there will be a lot more products arriving on the classic moped spare parts website and some more for sale on ebay under the classic-moped-spares ebay site store
